Procedure for Regulator Replacement#

1. Door Panel Removal#

• Remove the Phillips head screw(s) located in the armrest pocket.
• Remove the Phillips head screw(s) located behind the interior door handle (often concealed by a small cover).

2. Remove Power Window Switch Panel: Gently pry up the power window switch panel using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver. Disconnect the electrical connector(s) from the switch panel and set it aside.
3. Release Door Panel Clips: Starting from the bottom edge, carefully pull the door panel away from the door frame to release the retaining clips. Work your way around the perimeter until all clips are disengaged.
4. Disconnect Cables: Once the clips are released, lift the door panel slightly and disconnect the interior door handle cable(s) and any other electrical connectors (e.g., for courtesy lights) before fully removing the panel.

2. Water Shield Removal#

Behind the door panel, a plastic water shield is typically adhered to the door frame.

1. Carefully peel back the water shield to expose the inner door components, including the window regulator and motor. It is not always necessary to remove the entire shield; peeling back enough to access the regulator is sufficient. Try to keep the adhesive intact for reinstallation.

3. Secure the Window Glass#

Before removing the regulator, the window glass must be secured in the up position to prevent it from falling.

1. If the window is not fully up, temporarily reconnect the window switch and battery to raise the window, then disconnect the battery again.
2. Use strong masking tape or painter's tape across the top of the door frame and onto the glass to hold it securely in place. Alternatively, a wedge or block of wood can be used to support the glass from below.

4. Remove the Old Regulator Assembly#

With the window secured, the old regulator can be removed.

1. Disconnect Electrical Connector: Locate the electrical connector for the window motor and disconnect it.
2. Remove Mounting Bolts: Identify all bolts securing the window regulator assembly to the door frame. These are typically 10mm or 12mm bolts. Carefully remove them.
3. Detach Glass from Regulator: If the window is still attached to the regulator, carefully unbolt or unclip the glass from the regulator arm(s). This usually involves one or two bolts that pass through the glass mounting points.
4. Remove Regulator: Maneuver the old regulator assembly out through one of the access holes in the door frame. This may require some twisting and angling.

5. Install the New Regulator Assembly#

Installation is essentially the reverse of removal.

1. Position New Regulator: Carefully insert the new regulator assembly into the door frame through the access hole.
2. Attach Glass to Regulator: Align the new regulator's mounting points with the window glass and secure the glass to the regulator arm(s). Do not fully tighten these bolts yet.
3. Mount Regulator to Door Frame: Align the regulator's mounting holes with the corresponding holes in the door frame and loosely install the mounting bolts.
4. Connect Electrical: Reconnect the electrical connector to the new window motor.

6. Test and Adjust#

Before fully reassembling, test the new regulator.

1. Reconnect Battery: Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Test Window Operation: Operate the window switch to move the glass up and down. Ensure smooth, unobstructed movement throughout its full range.
3. Adjust Glass (if necessary): If the window binds or does not seal properly, loosen the bolts securing the glass to the regulator arms and adjust the glass position slightly. Once satisfactory, tighten all regulator and glass mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque. Refer to the factory service manual for precise torque values.
4. Disconnect Battery: Once satisfied with the operation, disconnect the negative battery terminal again.

7. Reassembly#

1. Re-adhere Water Shield: Carefully press the water shield back into place, ensuring a good seal to prevent moisture intrusion.
2. Reconnect Door Panel: Reconnect any electrical connectors and the door handle cable(s) to the door panel.
3. Install Door Panel: Align the door panel clips with their receptacles in the door frame and firmly press the panel into place until all clips engage.
4. Install Fasteners: Reinstall all screws for the armrest, door handle bezel, and behind the interior door handle.
5. Install Window Switch Panel: Reconnect the electrical connector(s) to the window switch panel and snap the panel back into its opening.
6. Final Battery Connection: Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Verification#

After reassembly, perform a final check:

• Test the power window multiple times to ensure smooth operation, proper sealing, and no unusual noises.
• Verify that all door panel components are securely fastened and that no tools or debris are left inside the door.
