Rear disc pad service on 2005–2011 Civic restores braking balance and parking-brake performance. Many rear calipers use a screw-in / wind-back piston that also sets the parking brake mechanism - pressing the piston straight in will damage the caliper.

Applicability#

• Honda Civic, roughly 2005–2011 (confirm disc rear brakes; some trims differ by market)
• Always match pad shape and wear sensor (if equipped) to the exact year/trim

Parts, Tools, and Consumables#

• Quality rear pads for the exact chassis/trim
• Brake cleaner, wire brush, high-temp caliper grease (slide pins only)
• C-clamp or dedicated rear caliper wind-back tool
• Torque wrench, jack stands, wheel chocks
• Optional: new slide-pin boots, hardware kit, rotors if below minimum thickness

Warning

Support the car on jack stands. Brake dust may be hazardous - wet clean, do not blow with compressed air. If the brake system must be opened, use the correct fluid and bleed procedure.

Inspection Before Parts#

1. Measure rotor thickness and runout against FSM limits.
2. Check pad wear sensors, shims, and anti-rattle clips.
3. Inspect slide pins for free movement and torn boots.
4. Confirm parking-brake cables move freely.

Procedure#

1. Loosen lug nuts, raise and support the vehicle, remove the rear wheel.
2. Remove the lower (or both) caliper guide pin bolts as required to swing or remove the caliper.
3. Hang the caliper by a wire - do not let it hang on the hose.
4. Remove old pads and hardware; note inner vs outer and any wear-sensor position.
5. Clean the pad abutments; replace rusty hardware.
6. Retract the piston with a wind-back tool in the correct rotation direction while aligning the piston notches for the pad lugs if used.
7. Apply a thin film of appropriate grease to slide pins and abutment contact points - keep grease off friction material and rotor face.
8. Install new pads and shims; refit caliper; torque guide pins to FSM values.
9. Refit the wheel; torque lugs in a star pattern to the published specification.
10. Before driving, pump the pedal until firm and verify parking-brake lever/pedal travel.

Bedding and Verification#

• Bed pads per pad manufacturer procedure (typically progressive stops from moderate speed without coming to a complete stop each cycle).
• Recheck torque after the first short drive.
• Confirm no ABS lights, no fluid leaks, and even braking.
