Acura was established in 1986 as the luxury division of Honda. The brand's inaugural luxury vehicle, the Acura Legend, received the Car and Driver Import Car of the Year award in 1991.

Following the success of the Legend, Acura expanded its lineup to include performance-oriented models such as the Integra and the flagship NSX. The NSX was notably recognized as the "Best Sports Car Ever Built" by Car and Driver in 1990.
