Random Access Memory (RAM) serves as the ECU's short-term memory store. It is utilized by the microprocessor to hold variables, lookup table calculations, and other transient data required for real-time engine management operations.
Important
RAM is volatile memory. All data stored within the RAM chip is erased immediately upon the loss of power to the ECU.
Functional Characteristics
- Volatile Storage: Unlike ROM or EEPROM, RAM does not retain information when the ignition is switched off or power is disconnected.
- Read/Write Capability: The ECU processor can both read from and write to RAM addresses dynamically during operation.
- Operational Role: RAM acts as a workspace for the processor to perform complex calculations, such as fuel trim adjustments and ignition timing corrections, before committing final values to the output drivers.
