OBD0 Stock Datalogging Capabilities

An overview of OBD0 stock datalogging capabilities and the current status of hardware and software support for Honda/Acura OBD0 ECUs.

Beginner 0

OBD0 ECUs contain internal routines capable of datalogging; however, there is currently no publicly available hardware or software ecosystem to support or interface with these functions.

Note

While the stock firmware includes routines for data transmission, these features remain largely undocumented and unsupported by modern tuning platforms.

Current Status

The stock datalogging routines within the OBD0 architecture are considered non-functional for practical tuning purposes due to the following limitations:

  • Lack of Interface Hardware: No commercially available cables or adapters exist to bridge the proprietary OBD0 communication protocol to modern diagnostic tools.
  • Software Compatibility: No tuning software currently supports the interpretation or logging of the data streams generated by these specific routines.
  • Development State: These routines are legacy features from the factory diagnostic process and were not designed for real-time performance monitoring or aftermarket calibration.

Technical Considerations

For users looking to perform data acquisition on OBD0 vehicles, the following alternatives are recommended:

  • External Sensors: Utilize standalone wideband controllers and data loggers that interface directly with sensors rather than the ECU.
  • ECU Upgrades: Consider converting to an OBD1 ECU platform, which offers robust, well-documented datalogging support through various aftermarket hardware and software solutions.

Important

Attempting to reverse-engineer the stock datalogging routines requires advanced knowledge of 8-bit assembly and proprietary Honda communication protocols. Proceed with caution if attempting to modify or probe these specific memory addresses.
