Turbocharger Fundamentals

A turbocharger is a centrifugal compressor that increases intake pressure in an internal-combustion engine, powered by an exhaust-gas turbine.

Beginner 0

A turbocharger is a centrifugal compressor that increases the intake pressure of an internal-combustion engine. It is driven by an exhaust-gas turbine mounted directly to the engine's exhaust manifold.

Technical Concepts

For advanced tuning and hardware selection, refer to the following documentation:

Note

Forced induction systems require significant adjustments to fuel and ignition maps within the ECU to prevent engine damage. Ensure your wideband oxygen sensor and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor are correctly calibrated for boost pressures.

Warning

Exceeding the volumetric efficiency limits of the stock engine internals can lead to catastrophic failure. Always verify your compression ratio and fuel system capacity before increasing boost.
