Honda ECU 8-Bit Checksum Verification and Correction

A checksum is a basic error-verification method calculated by summing the values within a ROM without accounting for carry or overflow. Honda OBD0 and OBD1 ECUs utilize 8-bit checksums, resulting in a value range of 00âFF (hexadecimal).
Important
When modifying ROM files, the checksum must be recalculated and updated to ensure the ECU accepts the modified binary. If the checksum is incorrect, the ECU will trigger a diagnostic error or fail to boot.
Checksum Calculation
The 8-bit checksum is the sum of all bytes in the ROM. To verify or correct a checksum, you must identify the current checksum value and adjust a "padding" byte (typically located at the end of the ROM file) to force the total sum to a specific target (usually 00).
Manual Correction Procedure
To manually correct a checksum using a hex editor (such as WinHex):
- Calculate Current Checksum: Use a hex editor's "Calculate Hash" or "Checksum" function, selecting the 8-bit option. Note the resulting value.
- Determine Offset: Locate an unused memory address near the end of the ROM file (often containing
FFor00). - Calculate Adjustment:
- If the target byte is
FF: Use the formulaFF - current_checksum = new_value. - If the target byte is
00: Use the formula00 - current_checksum = new_value.
