Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) is a type of non-volatile memory used in electronic control units to store calibration data, fuel maps, and ignition timing tables. Unlike standard EPROM, which requires ultraviolet light for erasure, EEPROM can be erased and reprogrammed electronically using a ROM burner or compatible diagnostic interface.
Technical Characteristics
EEPROM is favored in automotive applications for its ability to be updated without removing the chip from the circuit board or exposing it to UV light.
- Non-Volatile: Retains data even when power is removed from the ECU.
- In-Circuit Programmability: Allows for software updates and tuning changes via the ECU's communication port or a dedicated programmer.
- Durability: Designed for a high number of write/erase cycles, though it is finite compared to modern Flash memory.
Note
While EEPROM is often used interchangeably with Flash memory in casual conversation, they differ in their internal architecture and the granularity at which data can be erased (byte-level for EEPROM vs. block-level for Flash).

Warning
Always ensure the integrity of the data file before initiating an EEPROM write process. Corrupt data or power loss during the writing phase can result in a "bricked" ECU that may require specialized hardware recovery.
