Throttle Plate Operation and Function
The throttle plate is a mechanical valve within the throttle body that regulates airflow into the engine based on accelerator pedal position.
The throttle plate is a circular valve located within the throttle body assembly. It acts as the primary mechanical regulator for the volume of air entering the intake manifold.
Mechanical Function
As the accelerator pedal is depressed, the throttle plate rotates, increasing the cross-sectional area available for airflow. When the pedal is released, the plate returns to a near-closed position, restricting airflow to maintain engine idle speed.
Note
In most Honda OBD-series applications, the throttle plate is mechanically actuated via a cable connected to the accelerator pedal.
Diagnostic Considerations
The throttle plate must be properly calibrated to ensure accurate sensor readings and optimal engine performance.
- Idle Air Control (IAC): Because the throttle plate is designed to be nearly closed at idle, the IAC valve is responsible for bypassing a controlled amount of air to maintain a stable idle RPM.
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): The TPS is mounted directly to the throttle body shaft. It provides the ECU with a voltage signal corresponding to the exact angle of the throttle plate.
Warning
Do not adjust the factory-set throttle stop screw unless performing a specific service procedure. Altering this setting can lead to incorrect TPS calibration and erratic idle behavior.
Common Maintenance
- Cleaning: Carbon buildup around the edges of the throttle plate and the bore of the throttle body can cause the plate to stick or result in an unstable idle. Use a dedicated throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth to remove deposits.
- Inspection: Ensure the plate moves smoothly through its full range of motion without binding or catching on the throttle body walls.
