Knock Control Tuning

Honda knock control is not a general-purpose detonation recovery system. In the Hondata tuning model, it is a calibration system built around conservative base timing, a knock ignition limit, and a slow-moving correction factor that reflects fuel quality. That distinction matters when you tune it.

How The System Works

The ECU starts with the main ignition table, then compares that value with the knock ignition limit table. The lower of the two becomes the allowed timing ceiling for that load and rpm point.

If the ECU sees knock sensor activity, it can apply additional retard based on the knock retard table and the current knock control state. The result is not a rapid back-and-forth correction loop. It is a measured adjustment around the factory timing strategy.

Important

The knock control strategy only helps if the main ignition table, knock limit table, and knock sensitivity are all tuned as a set. Raising one table without revisiting the others can advance timing more than intended.

The Three Tables That Matter

Practical Tuning Rules

  1. Keep the main ignition table conservative in cells where the knock limit is already below MBT.
  2. Use the knock ignition limit to shape the safe ceiling, not to hide an over-advanced base table.
  3. Increase knock sensitivity only when the sensor signal is too noisy for the ECU to trust.
  4. Use smaller knock retard values than stock when you want a narrower correction range.
  5. On boosted engines, do not leave boost cells with generous positive knock limits unless you have data to justify them.

Warning

If you reduce knock sensitivity too far, the ECU may stop responding reliably to real knock events. That is a protection loss, not an optimization.

What The Data Means

The knock control value is effectively a slow estimate of how much correction the ECU believes the engine needs for the fuel in use. When that value rises, the ECU can use more of the knock retard range. When it stays near zero, the engine is operating closer to the uncorrected base timing.

The useful takeaway is simple: the factory strategy is trying to preserve power when conditions allow it, not to chase maximum timing at all costs.

Tuning Sequence

  1. Set the main ignition table first.
  2. Shape the knock ignition limit table so it does not exceed the safe margin for the fuel you expect.
  3. Adjust sensitivity only after the mechanical setup is stable.
  4. Validate with logs and knock sensor behavior, not just commanded timing.

Tip

Noisy valvetrain parts, exhaust changes, or poor sensor mounting can force you to revisit sensitivity. Fix the signal path before you relax the protection model.
