Honda B-Series Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement

Most B-series VTEC engines are interference engines. Replace the timing belt, water pump, and tension hardware together.

Applicability#

B16 / B17 / B18 / B20 engines with belt-driven cams. Engines with balancer shafts need the balancer belt and related tensioner serviced at the same time.

Parts Kit#

• Timing belt (+ balancer belt if equipped)
• Water pump and seal
• Belt tensioner and idlers
• Cam/crank seals if stained
• Coolant; consider a new thermostat

Alignment#

1. Set cylinder 1 to TDC on the compression stroke.
2. Align crank and both cam marks to the FSM references.
3. Support the engine before removing the mount that blocks cover access.

Service Steps#

1. Disconnect the battery and drain coolant.
2. Remove belts, mount, and timing covers as required.
3. Release tension and remove the timing belt (and balancer belt).
4. Replace the water pump; clean the sealing surface; torque evenly.
5. Install new idlers/tensioner; fit the new belt with all marks aligned.
6. Apply tension using the FSM method (auto-tensioner pin or deflection procedure).
7. Turn the crank by hand at least two full revolutions; re-check marks.
8. Reassemble covers and mount; refill and bleed coolant; leak check.

Warning

Do not use the starter to test a new belt until hand rotation confirms free movement and correct marks.

After Repair#

• Confirm idle and noise after warm-up
• Recheck for coolant seepage at the pump
• Verify no new ABS/charge lights from rushed reconnections
