A distributor is a mechanical and electrical device that routes high-voltage pulses from the ignition coil to the individual spark plugs in the correct firing order. In Honda applications, the distributor housing often integrates critical engine management sensors.

Functionality

The primary purpose of the distributor is to synchronize the ignition timing with the engine's rotation. By utilizing an internal rotor and cap, the system ensures that the high-voltage spark is delivered to the appropriate cylinder at the precise moment required for combustion.

In Honda OBD0, OBD1, and OBD2 systems, the distributor assembly typically houses the Crankshaft Position (CKP), Top Dead Center (TDC), and Cylinder Position (CYP) sensors.

Integrated Sensors

Most Honda distributors contain the following internal sensors, which are essential for the ECU to determine engine speed and position:

  • CKP (Crankshaft Position Sensor): Detects crankshaft speed and position.
  • TDC (Top Dead Center Sensor): Identifies when the number one piston is at top dead center.
  • CYP (Cylinder Position Sensor): Identifies the specific cylinder for sequential fuel injection.

Maintenance and Diagnostics

Distributor performance is critical for engine efficiency and emissions. Common failure points include:

  • Internal Coil: Failure leads to a complete loss of spark.
  • Ignition Control Module (ICM/Igniter): Often fails due to heat soak, resulting in intermittent or total spark loss.
  • Cap and Rotor: Wear on these components can cause misfires or weak spark delivery.
  • Shaft Seals: Internal oil leaks can contaminate the sensors and the ICM, leading to erratic sensor signals or electrical shorts.
