Real-Time Programmability (RTP)
Real-Time Programmability (RTP) allows for live adjustments to ECU fuel and ignition maps while the engine is running.
Real-Time Programmability (RTP) refers to the capability of modifying an ECU's calibration, fuel maps, or ignition timing while the engine is actively running. This allows for immediate feedback and adjustment during the tuning process without the need to power cycle the ECU or re-flash the memory chip.
Note
RTP is distinct from traditional chip-burning methods, which require the ECU to be powered down and the EPROM to be physically removed or erased before new data can be written.
Implementation and Hardware
Achieving RTP on factory Honda ECUs requires specialized hardware interfaces that intercept the communication between the ECU processor and the memory storage. By replacing the standard EPROM with a dual-port RAM or an emulator, the tuning software can write data to the memory addresses simultaneously as the ECU reads them.
Supported Systems
While many standalone engine management systems offer native RTP, implementing this functionality on factory-based ECUs is a primary focus for advanced engine management development. Systems that support RTP include:

Important
When performing real-time tuning, ensure that the communication link between the tuning device and the ECU is stable. Interruption of data transfer during engine operation can lead to corrupted map values and potential engine damage.
