Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) engines utilize a single camshaft located in the cylinder head to actuate both intake and exhaust valves. This configuration is the standard architecture for the majority of Honda D-series engines.
Operational Overview
In an SOHC design, the camshaft is driven by the crankshaft via a timing belt or chain. As the camshaft rotates, the lobes directly actuate the valve trainâtypically through rocker armsâto manage the intake of air-fuel mixture and the expulsion of exhaust gases.
Note
Unlike DOHC (Double Overhead Cam) configurations, which utilize separate camshafts for intake and exhaust valves, the SOHC design prioritizes mechanical simplicity and reduced cylinder head mass.
