5050s VTEC Conversion Fix

Troubleshooting and installation guide for using 5050s components in Honda VTEC conversion circuits to resolve MIL code 21.

This guide addresses a common issue when installing a 5050s component into the IC14 position on a Honda ECU board, specifically when it results in a MIL Code 21 (VTEC Solenoid Malfunction).


Installation Procedure

Follow these steps to correctly install the 5050s component and resolve Code 21:

  1. Prepare Board: Modify and install the required VTEC components as normal, but do not install the IC14 component yet.
  2. Install 5050s: Install the 5050s component in the IC14 position. Do not solder pin 4.
  3. Bridge PCB Pads: On the ECU PCB, bridge pads 2 and 4. Warning: Ensure you are bridging the PCB pads, not the legs of the 5050s component.
  4. Resistor Mod: Take an 820 Ohm resistor. Solder a short length of wire (approx. 4cm) to one end of the resistor. Solder the other end of the resistor to the emitter of Q102 (this provides a 5V reference).
  5. Final Connection: Solder the free end of the wire to pin 4 of the 5050s. Trim the excess leg length if necessary to ensure a clean install.

Technical Verification

This method has been tested to hold VTEC engagement continuously without failure or overheating of components. If the issue persists, verify all solder joints and ensure no unintended bridges exist between the pins of the 5050s or the surrounding PCB pads.
