What ECU should be in my car?

Generally, you should be running an ecu that matches your engine year and type. i.e. d16a6 should run a PM6, B18 should run a PR4 OBD0, P72 or P74 OBD1, or a P73 or P75 in OBD2. OBD2 is unfortunatly still the realm of various, for pay, engine management systems, so it may be wise to back convert your setup to a more open source friendly OBD1 or OBD0 ecu.

How do I identify this ECU?

Every ecu has a sticker on the side with various bits of information. The string we are concerned with is a string that fits this format: LLN-LNN, where L is a letter, and N is a number. The first 3 characters will tell you the ecu family, and the last 3 characters will tell you if the ecu is manual or automatic. Generally, ecu's which are manual will have a range of characters starting with -A00 and going to -A49. Autmatic ecu's will be greater than or equal to -A50.

I'm not a programmer but I'd like to help out. What can I do?

Code always needs to be tested. If you're willing to be a guinea pig, make sure you let the other coders know. Those of us who write code sometimes don't even have a car/ECU that will run the code we wrote! We can't test every setup because (for the most part) we are enthusiasts, not professionals. We lack budgets, we lack time.

Additionally, things come up from time to time that will be posted on the forums where assistance is desired. I (blundar) am a pretty decent sysadmin, a decent coder and a dangerous politician. :) Things come up that are beyond my abilities running this website. Tom (Web Geek) designed this Wiki layout. There have been numerous competitions for logos. If you're artistically inclined, let it be known so you can be put to work.

Aside from what's been mentioned, there are always other things to be done to help. You can read new ECUs, take pictures and add them to this Wiki. You can try to help new users with problems they are having if you've been through the same thing. You can write Wiki entries or articles about how to do stuff that you've gone through. Getting involved doesn't mean being a coder, it means you want to help others.
